Comparing Japanese Knife Prices Across Countries: Currency, Shipping, Stock and Taxes
By Knife Fit · Updated · Written from the sources below, not from testing
Short answer: A price in a comparison is the product price at one store on one day. To know what you will pay, add the store's shipping to your country, any import duty and sales tax or VAT your country charges, and check that the item is still in stock. Prices from stores abroad are converted at a published exchange rate but are charged in the store's own currency, so your card may apply a different rate and a foreign-transaction fee.
Currency
Knife Fit shows every price in US dollars, converted from the store's currency at the European Central Bank's reference rate (the rate date is shown on each knife page). The store still charges in its own currency, so the amount your card statement shows can differ slightly from the converted figure.
Shipping and taxes
- Shipping: each store sets its own rates and thresholds; a store abroad often costs more to ship than one in your country. The "Ships to" column shows which of the US, Canada and Israel a store serves.
- Duty and tax: whether import duty, sales tax or VAT applies, and how much, depends on your country and the value of the parcel, and the rules change. Knife Fit does not estimate them. Check your country's customs authority; for the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes customs duty information.
- Courier fees: some carriers add a handling fee when they collect duty on delivery.
Stock and freshness
Stores sell out and reprice without notice. Knife Fit counts a price only when the store lists the item as in stock and the price was read within the last 48 hours; anything else is shown separately with the reason. Even so, confirm availability on the store's page before you order.
Make sure it is the same knife
Stores name variants differently (a damascus-clad version of a line, a different handle, a different length). Knife Fit only compares listings it has matched to the same version; if a price looks too good, check the listing's title, length, steel and handle first.
